How to measure distance using a fiber optic pigtail

You can measure fiber distance using a fiber optic pigtail by connecting it to an OTDR or power meter with a temporary splice or launch cable setup.

Understanding Fiber Optic Pigtails

A fiber optic pigtail is a short fiber cable with a factory-terminated connector on one end and a bare fiber on the other, designed for splicing into a fiber network . The connector end plugs into testing equipment or active devices, while the bare end is spliced to the fiber under test, providing a low-loss, reliable connection.

Using an OTDR for Distance Measurement

  1. Prepare the Pigtail and Fiber: Clean the connector end and ensure the bare fiber is ready for a temporary fusion or mechanical splice to the fiber under test .
  2. Connect the Launch Cable: Attach the pigtail to the OTDR as a launch cable. This allows the OTDR to measure the initial connector and splice losses accurately .
  3. Set OTDR Parameters:
    • Wavelength: Choose 1310nm or 1550nm depending on fiber type.
    • Distance Setting: Set the OTDR distance to 1.5 times the expected fiber length to avoid false reflection peaks.
    • Pulse Width: Shorter pulses improve resolution for short distances; longer pulses are better for longer fibers.
    • Refractive Index: Adjust according to the fiber specifications.
  4. Perform the Measurement: Take a trace of the fiber. The OTDR calculates distance by measuring the time it takes for backscattered light to return from events along the fiber .
  5. Interpret the Trace: Identify the fiber end, splices, and connectors. The distance to each event is displayed on the OTDR trace, allowing you to determine the fiber length and locate faults.

Using a Power Meter and Temporary Splice

For shorter fibers or when an OTDR is unavailable:

  1. Splice the Pigtail: Temporarily fusion or mechanically splice the bare end of the pigtail to the fiber under test .
  2. Measure Output Power: Connect the pigtail's connector end to a power meter. Measure the optical power at the far end.
  3. Calculate Distance: If the fiber attenuation coefficient is known, you can estimate the fiber length based on the measured power loss over distance.

Tips for Accurate Measurement

  • Ensure good cleaves on the bare fiber for reliable splicing.
  • Use temporary splices without splice protectors for field measurements.
  • For very short distances (<5 meters), OTDRs may only measure combined connector and splice loss, so longer pigtails improve accuracy .
  • Consider bidirectional measurements to average losses and reduce errors caused by backscatter mismatches . By following these steps, a fiber optic pigtail can serve as a reliable launch cable or test interface to measure fiber distance, identify faults, and assess attenuation in both field and lab environments.
