OTDR Principles and Functionality

An Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) works by sending a series of laser pulses into the fiber and measuring the backscattered or reflected light to detect events such as splices, connectors, bends, or breaks along the fiber. The OTDR generates a trace (OTDR signature) showing distance versus accumulated optical loss, allowing precise localization of faults and measurement of fiber attenuation and reflectance . Modern OTDRs are single-port instruments, enabling a technician to characterize the entire link from one end, which is ideal for trunk line monitoring .

Self-Operated Trunk Line Monitoring

Self-operated OTDR systems, such as those integrated into NCS 1010 OLT and ILA nodes, provide automated bidirectional measurements.   4. Monitor in Real-Time: Self-operated OTDRs can continuously monitor the trunk line during live traffic, alerting operators to sudden losses or reflections.
  5. Analyze and Export Data: Review SOR files for event locations and loss values. Files can be exported via SCP or other network protocols for documentation and further analysis .
