Fusion Splicing

Fusion splicing is the most widely used method for creating permanent fiber connections. It involves the following steps:

  • Stripping the protective coating from the fiber ends.
  • Cleaning the bare fibers with alcohol wipes.
  • Precisely aligning the fiber cores using a fusion splicer machine.
  • Melting the fiber ends with an electric arc to fuse them into a single continuous strand.
  • Protecting the joint with a heat-shrink sleeve to restore mechanical strength . Advantages of fusion splicing:
  • Extremely low insertion loss (typically around 0.02–0.1 dB).
  • Minimal back reflection.

Mechanical Splicing

Mechanical splicing does not involve melting the fibers. Instead, it aligns the fiber ends within a mechanical fixture or sleeve, often using an index-matching gel to reduce light loss. The fibers are held in place by the assembly, allowing light to pass through with minimal attenuation . Advantages of mechanical splicing:

  • Faster and easier to perform in the field.
  • Requires less specialized equipment.
