Armor-mounted fiber optic cable splicing method

Splicing armored fiber optic cables requires careful preparation, proper tools, and precise fusion splicing to ensure fiber integrity and reliable signal performance.

Cable Preparation

Before splicing, select the appropriate armored fiber cable for your environment—indoor armored cables for light protection and flexibility, or industrial/outdoor armored cables for waterproof and abrasion-resistant applications . Begin by cutting the desired cable length and marking the end for stripping. Remove the outer armor carefully using a ring-cut or specialized stripping tool, exposing the inner fiber without damaging it . For micro-armored cables, use dedicated removal tools to maintain fiber integrity .

Fiber Coating Stripping

  • Polyimide-coated fibers: Char the coating lightly, then clean with alcohol and a lint-free wipe.
  • Acrylate-coated fibers: Use a mechanical fiber stripper, then clean with alcohol and a Texwipe . Ensure the stripped fiber is free of debris and properly aligned for splicing.

Splicing Procedure

  1. Slide heat shrink tubing and stainless steel (SS) protection tubes over the cable before splicing .
  2. Prepare the fiber ends by cutting Kevlar and wires close to the jacket. Clamp the core tube in a vise and trim carefully using an abrasive cutoff wheel .
  3. Use a fusion splicer with a microscope to align fibers precisely. Avoid pulling directly on the fibers; pull from the middle of the cable to reduce stress .
  4. After splicing, slide the heat shrink tubing over the splice and shrink it to secure the joint.

Testing and Verification

After splicing, perform optical testing using an Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) or power meter to verify signal continuity and ensure insertion loss is within acceptable limits .

Installation Considerations

  • Maintain the minimum bend radius: typically 10D dynamic / 5D static for single-mode, 20D/10D for multi-mode, and industrial cables follow 20D/10D .
  • Avoid twisting or pushing the cable through conduits. Pull smoothly and check the cable's rated tensile load.
  • For outdoor or wet environments, ensure cables and connectors meet IP protection ratings to prevent moisture ingress .

Best Practices

  • Plan for slack and preparation length to allow proper routing and bend radius control .
  • Use color-coded tape or markers to indicate required distances for closures or hardware .
  • Follow manufacturer-specific instructions for grounding and enclosure installation, as these may vary . By following these steps, armored fiber optic cable splicing can be performed safely, maintaining fiber integrity and ensuring long-term reliable performance.
