Material requirements for cable splice boxes

Cable splice boxes must be made from non-combustible, corrosion-resistant materials suitable for the installation environment, such as metal or approved plastics, and provide adequate protection for splices and conductors.

Material Types

Metallic Boxes: Typically made from steel, stainless steel, or aluminum, metal splice boxes offer strong mechanical protection and can be grounded to maintain electrical continuity. They must be thick enough to support internal conductors and devices, and corrosion-resistant metals like stainless steel or aluminum are preferred for damp or outdoor environments . Non-Metallic Boxes: Plastic or other non-metallic materials are used where corrosion resistance, lightweight installation, or UV resistance is important. These materials must be suitable for the electrical environment and rated for wet or damp locations if necessary .

Environmental Considerations

Splice boxes must be suitable for the specific environment in which they are installed. For outdoor or industrial applications, boxes should have a high ingress protection (IP) rating to prevent dust, moisture, and other contaminants from damaging the conductors . For fibre optic splice boxes, additional protection against mechanical stress and vibration is required, with strain relief and defined bend radii to protect sensitive fibres .

Splice Protection Materials

Conductors inside splice boxes must be joined using splicing devices, solder, brazing, or welding with fusible metals or alloys. All splices and free conductor ends must be insulated with materials equivalent to the conductor insulation or with approved insulating devices. For direct-burial applications, splicing materials must be watertight and mechanically protective .

Additional Requirements

  • Boxes must be accessible for inspection and maintenance .
  • Fasteners and screws entering the box must not damage conductors or compromise insulation .
  • For fibre optic systems, adapters and connectors must meet IEC standards and maintain low attenuation and high mating cycle durability . In summary, cable splice boxes require materials that are non-combustible, corrosion-resistant, and suitable for the installation environment, with proper insulation and protection for all splices, ensuring compliance with NEC and industry standards .
