An SFP module acts as a “translator” that converts electrical signals from network devices into optical signals for fiber or copper transmission, and vice versa.

Function of SFP Modules

An SFP (Small Form-factor Pluggable) module is a compact, hot-pluggable transceiver used in switches, routers, servers, and media converters to connect to fiber-optic or copper cables. Its primary role is to convert electrical signals from the host device into optical signals for transmission over fiber, or into electrical signals for copper cabling, enabling seamless communication across different media types . Components and Operation

For optical SFP modules, the module contains a TOSA (Transmit Optical Subassembly) and ROSA (Receive Optical Subassembly) to handle light signals. For copper SFP modules, the module integrates the necessary PHY and magnetics to convert electrical signals to Ethernet over twisted pair . The module connects to the host device via a defined pinout and electrical interface, often including an I²C interface and EEPROM for management and monitoring, allowing the host to read module information, temperature, voltage, and optical power levels .

SFP modules come in various types to support different speeds and distances:

• SFP (1G): Up to 1.25 Gbps
• SFP+ (10G): Up to 10 Gbps
• SFP28 (25G): Up to 25 Gbps
