Preform Fabrication

The first step in fiber optic fabrication is creating a preform, a glass rod that replicates the fiber's core and cladding structure on a larger scale. High-purity silica (SiO₂) is the primary material, often doped with germanium tetrachloride (GeCl₄) to increase the core's refractive index and fluorine compounds to lower the cladding's refractive index, ensuring total internal reflection . Preforms are typically produced using Modified Chemical Vapor Deposition (MCVD), where volatile precursors react inside a rotating silica tube to form microscopic glass particles (soot) that are deposited in layers and then collapsed into a solid rod . Other methods include Outside Vapor Deposition (OVD) and Vapor Axial Deposition (VAD), which also build high-purity glass preforms with controlled refractive index profiles .

Fiber Drawing

Once the preform is prepared, it is placed in a fiber-drawing tower, where the bottom end is heated until soft. A thin fiber is then pulled from the preform while maintaining precise diameter control, typically around 125 micrometers for single-mode fibers . The fiber is immediately cooled and coated with a protective polymer layer to enhance mechanical strength and prevent surface damage. Advanced techniques may include spinning the fiber to reduce polarization mode dispersion or in-line writing of fiber Bragg gratings for specialized applications .

Alternative Fabrication Methods

For soft glass fibers, the double crucible method allows simultaneous drawing of core and cladding from molten glass reservoirs. Plastic optical fibers are commonly produced via extrusion, where molten polymer is shaped into fiber without a preform . These direct methods are simpler but generally used for non-silica fibers or specialty applications.

Quality Control and Material Considerations

Throughout fabrication, ultra-high purity is critical, as even trace impurities like hydroxyl ions or metals can increase signal attenuation . Parameters such as temperature, gas flow, deposition rate, and rotational speed are tightly controlled to ensure uniform refractive index profiles and minimize defects . The resulting fibers are capable of transmitting terabits of data over long distances with minimal loss, making them suitable for telecommunications, data centers, and industrial networks .
