Link aggregation combines multiple physical switch ports into a single logical link, increasing bandwidth and redundancy while supporting VLAN traffic.

What is Link Aggregation?

Link aggregation, also called port trunking, port teaming, or LAG (Link Aggregation Group), allows multiple Ethernet links between two devices to act as a single logical connection . This can be applied between switches, servers, NAS devices, or multi-port access points. The aggregated link provides:

  • Increased bandwidth: Multiple 1 Gbps links can combine to deliver higher throughput.
  • Redundancy: If one link fails, traffic continues over the remaining links.
  • Load balancing: Traffic is distributed across all member links.

VLAN Integration

A LAG can carry VLAN traffic just like a single trunk port. When configured as a trunk, the LAG can transport multiple VLANs between switches, ensuring that VLAN segmentation is maintained across the aggregated links . Each switch treats the LAG as a single logical interface, simplifying VLAN configuration.

LACP vs Static LAG

  • LACP (Link Aggregation Control Protocol): An IEEE 802.3ad standard that dynamically negotiates link aggregation between devices. LACP ensures that misconfigured links do not cause network issues and automatically removes failed links from the LAG .
  • Static LAG: Manually configured on both devices without negotiation. Both sides must match exactly, and there is no automatic detection of failed links . Best practice: Use LACP whenever both devices support it for dynamic management and error prevention.

Configuration Overview

  1. Select member ports: Choose the physical ports on each switch to include in the LAG.
  2. Create the LAG: On managed switches, navigate to the link aggregation or trunking settings and assign the selected ports to a LAG .
  3. Enable VLAN trunking: Configure the LAG as a trunk if it will carry multiple VLANs. Assign allowed VLANs as needed.
  4. Verify connectivity: Ensure the LAG is active and that traffic flows correctly. LACP-enabled LAGs will show active links and automatically handle failures.

Best Practices

  • Separate physical paths: Run cables over different routes to reduce the risk of simultaneous failure.
  • Consistent configuration: Ensure VLANs and LAG settings match on both ends.
  • Monitor performance: Check for load balancing efficiency and link utilization.
  • Use LACP when possible: Provides dynamic link management and reduces misconfiguration risks. By combining VLANs with link aggregation, networks can achieve higher throughput, improved redundancy, and simplified management, making it ideal for core switch connections, server uplinks, and storage networks .
