Basic Function

A beam splitter is an optical device designed to divide an incoming light beam into transmitted and reflected components. The splitting can be equal, such as a 50/50 ratio, or unequal depending on the design and application. Some beam splitters also work in reverse, combining two beams into a single output beam .

Types of Beam Splitters

  • Non-polarizing beam splitters: Separate light based on optical power, maintaining the original polarization state. They are specified by their reflection/transmission (R/T) ratio .
  • Polarizing beam splitters: Split light into orthogonal polarization states, typically reflecting S-polarized light and transmitting P-polarized light. They are characterized by their extinction ratio, which measures the purity of polarization separation .
  • Dichroic beam splitters: Separate light by wavelength. Shortpass splitters transmit light below a cutoff wavelength and reflect longer wavelengths, while longpass splitters transmit longer wavelengths and reflect shorter ones. Multi-band splitters can handle three or more wavelength bands .

Construction Types

  • Cube beam splitters: Made from two triangular prisms cemented together, often with a partially reflective coating on the hypotenuse. They are widely used in interferometers and laser systems .
  • Plate beam splitters: Thin glass plates with a reflective coating on one surface, often used at a 45° angle of incidence. They are lighter, more compact, and less prone to chromatic aberration than cubes .
  • Other designs: Include pellicle, crystal, Brewster window, and wedged plate beam splitters, which can create multiple attenuated beams or allow continuous adjustment of the splitting ratio .
