Connection method for 12-core fiber optic box splice reel

A 12-core fiber optic box splice reel is typically connected using fusion or mechanical splicing within a splice tray, with proper fiber preparation, alignment, and protection to ensure low loss and long-term reliability.

Fiber Preparation

Before splicing, the 12-core ribbon cable must be prepared:

  1. Strip the Cable Jacket: Remove the outer jacket and buffer coating to expose the individual fibers using a fiber cable stripper, leaving bare fiber cores ready for splicing .
  2. Clean the Fibers: Use lint-free wipes and isopropyl alcohol to remove dust, dirt, or contaminants from the fiber ends .
  3. Cleave the Fibers: Employ a precision fiber cleaver to create smooth, perpendicular end faces, which is critical for low splice loss .

Splicing Methods

There are two main splicing methods:

  • Fusion Splicing: Uses a fusion splicer to weld the fiber ends together, providing the lowest insertion loss (~0.1 dB) and high mechanical strength. This is the preferred method for permanent connections, especially in singlemode fibers .
  • Mechanical Splicing: Aligns fibers using a mechanical device and index-matching gel, with slightly higher loss (~0.3 dB). It is faster and suitable for temporary connections or multimode fibers .

Using a Splice Tray

Once fibers are spliced, they should be organized in a fiber splice tray inside the box:

  1. Arrange Fibers: Place the spliced fibers neatly in the tray slots to maintain bend radius and prevent stress .
  2. Protect Splices: Use heat-shrink sleeves or protective covers to shield the splice points from environmental damage .
  3. Label and Manage: Clearly label each fiber for identification and ensure logical routing to facilitate future maintenance .

Ribbon Cable Furcation

For 12-core ribbon cables, furcation kits may be used to separate the fibers into manageable bundles:

  • Typically, 4 ribbons per bundle are recommended when using MTP splice-on connectors or splice cassettes to ensure compatibility with standard furcation kits .
  • Each ribbon-filled buffer tube is treated individually during furcation to simplify splicing and organization .

Testing and Verification

After splicing:

  • Test the Fibers: Use an OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer) or power meter to verify signal integrity and ensure minimal insertion loss .
  • Secure the Box: Close the splice box properly to protect fibers from dust, moisture, and mechanical stress.
