Step 1: Prepare the Cable

Begin by stripping 3–5 cm of the outer jacket of the 4-core fiber cable using a cable slitter. Expose the individual fibers and carefully strip the 250 µm coating from each core using fiber stripping pliers. Avoid bending the fibers sharply; maintain a bending radius greater than 30 mm to prevent damage. Clean each fiber with an IPA-soaked swab to remove dust and oils .

Step 2: Choose the Splicing Method

  • Fusion Splicing: Recommended for permanent, low-loss connections. Uses an electric arc to fuse fiber ends, achieving an average loss of 0.1 dB. Ideal for long-distance or high-bandwidth applications .
  • Mechanical Splicing: Uses an alignment device and index-matching gel to hold fibers together. Slightly higher loss (~0.3 dB) but allows temporary or quick connections .

Step 3: Align and Splice Fibers

Insert each fiber into the fusion splicer or mechanical splice holder. Ensure precise alignment of the cores. For fusion splicing, the splicer automatically aligns and fuses the fibers. For mechanical splicing, apply the index-matching gel and secure the fibers in the holder .

Step 4: Protect the Splice

Place each spliced fiber into a splice protection sleeve or cassette to prevent mechanical stress and maintain proper bending radius. This is especially important when handling multiple cores in a single cable .

Step 5: Connector Termination

For 10 connectors on a 4-core cable:

  • Use LC, SC, or ST connectors depending on your network requirements. LC connectors are compact and suitable for high-density setups, while SC connectors are push-pull type for easy insertion and removal .
  • Terminate each fiber by cleaving the end precisely, inserting it into the connector ferrule, and securing it according to the connector type. Ensure minimal insertion loss (typically 0.2–0.75 dB per connector) .

Step 6: Testing and Verification

After splicing and connectorization, test each fiber using an optical power meter or OTDR to verify signal integrity, attenuation, and reflectivity. Ensure all 4 cores with 10 connectors meet the required performance standards .
