Purpose of Metal Reinforcement

Metal reinforcement in optical cables serves as the mechanical backbone, protecting fragile optical fibers from stretching, bending, and external stress during installation and operation. It ensures stable transmission of data, particularly in applications like 5G networks, data centers, and long-distance communications, where high reliability is critical . The reinforcement also allows cables to withstand environmental challenges such as wind, ice, and mechanical tension.

Types of Metal Reinforcement

  • Steel Wire Reinforcement: The most common metal reinforcement, steel wires are used as the central core or as stranded layers around the fiber. They offer high tensile strength (1600–2000 MPa), low relaxation under long-term stress, and excellent corrosion resistance when treated with hot-dip galvanizing or plastic coatings .   • Resist lightning strikes and electrochemical reactions.
  • Reduce overall cable weight, simplifying installation.
