Fiber optic cables with metallic components must be grounded at building entry points or exterior terminations to ensure safety and system reliability.

When Grounding is Required

Fiber optic cables do not carry electrical current, so non-metallic, non-armored cables generally do not require grounding. However, armored or conductive fiber optic cables containing metallic components such as steel armor or metallic strength members must be grounded to prevent electrical hazards, dissipate electrostatic charges, and reduce electromagnetic interference (EMI) risks . Grounding is particularly necessary when the cable is exposed to contact with power conductors or enters a building from outside .

NEC and Industry Standards

  • NEC Article 770.93 (A & B) requires grounding of metallic members at the point of building entry or exterior termination, or alternatively, interruption by an insulating joint .
  • NEC 770.100 specifies that conductive fiber optic cables must be grounded through a bonding or grounding electrode conductor. While the minimum grounding conductor size is 14 AWG, manufacturers typically recommend a UL-listed 6 AWG copper conductor for both grounding and bonding purposes .
  • ANSI/TIA/EIA-607 and TIA-942 provide additional guidance for establishing a uniform grounding and bonding infrastructure in commercial buildings .

Grounding Procedure

  1. Expose the metallic component: Strip back the outer jacket to expose at least 1 inch of the metallic armor or strength member.
  2. Attach a metal clamp: Secure a metal clamp to the exposed metallic section to ensure a reliable electrical connection.
  3. Connect to the grounding system: Run a UL-listed 6 AWG copper conductor from the clamp to the building's grounding electrode system, keeping the path as straight and short as practicable (ideally no more than 6 meters).
  4. Secure the connection: Wrap the clamp and exposed metal with electrical tape to prevent moisture ingress and protect the cable jacket .

Special Considerations

  • Insulating joints: If an insulating joint or equivalent device interrupts the metallic members, grounding is not required even if the cable is exposed to power conductors .
  • Tracer wires: Metallic tracer wires associated with fiber may also require grounding at splice points or building entrances to safely dissipate induced voltages from nearby high-voltage lines .
  • Exterior terminations: Grounding or interruption should occur as close as possible to the point where the cable emerges from the building or conduit .
