Fiber Optic Cable

Fiber optic cables are specialized cables that transmit data as light signals, offering high-speed, long-distance, and interference-resistant communication.

Structure and Composition

A fiber optic cable consists of one or more optical fibers, each made of a core and a cladding layer. The core carries light signals, while the cladding reflects light back into the core through total internal reflection, ensuring minimal signal loss. Each fiber is coated with a protective polymer layer, such as acrylate or polyimide, to prevent damage. Multiple fibers are bundled together and encased in additional protective sheathing, which can include layers for mechanical strength, moisture resistance, and environmental protection depending on the installation setting .

Types of Fiber Optic Cables

Fiber optic cables are generally classified into single-mode and multi-mode:

  • Single-mode fibers have a small core (around 8–10 microns) and transmit light in a single path, making them ideal for long-distance, high-speed applications such as internet backbones, cable TV, and telecommunications .
  • Multi-mode fibers have a larger core (about 50–62.5 microns) that allows multiple light paths, suitable for shorter distances like local area networks (LANs) and data centers . Cables can also be designed as loose tube or tight-buffered, with additional options for armoring or fire resistance depending on environmental and safety requirements .
