High-speed stacked optical cables, including Active Optical Cables (AOCs) and multi-channel assemblies, support data rates from 14 Gbps to over 3,500 Gbps with single-mode or multi-mode fiber and a variety of connector options.

Cable Types and Fiber Options

High-speed optical cables are available in single-mode (SM) and multi-mode (MM) fibers. Single-mode fibers (OS1/OS2) support long distances exceeding 500 meters and are recommended for 200G or 400G Ethernet applications, while multi-mode fibers (OM3/OM4/OM5) are optimized for shorter distances and high-bandwidth applications using laser transmitters . Multi-mode OM1/OM2 fibers use LED transmitters and are less expensive but limited in distance.

Connector Types

Optical connectors for high-speed cables include LC, MPO-12, and MT ferrules, with end-face polish types such as PC, UPC, and APC. APC connectors, polished at an 8-degree angle, reduce return loss and optical reflection, making them suitable for high-bandwidth applications . Stacked and Multi-Channel Assemblies

Stacked optical cables, often used in Active Optical Cable (AOC) assemblies, allow multiple fiber channels in a compact form factor. These assemblies can support 16 or 32 differential pairs, achieving aggregate data rates up to 3,584 Gbps using PAM4 signaling from IC packages to panels . Samtec Flyover® technology enables high-speed routing with low skew twinax or optical channels, supporting PCIe x4/x8 sidebands and flexible end options such as AcceleRate®, NovaRay, and Si-Fly™ connectors .
