Optical cable loss is measured by calculating the total attenuation of light through a fiber, using either insertion loss testing with a light source and power meter or an OTDR to identify losses along the cable.

Understanding Optical Fiber Loss

Optical fiber loss, also called attenuation, is the reduction in light signal strength as it travels through a fiber. Losses are categorized into:

  • Intrinsic losses: caused by the fiber's material properties, including absorption, scattering, and dispersion .
  • Extrinsic losses: caused by external factors such as splices, connectors, and bending . Loss is typically expressed in dB/km and varies with wavelength and fiber type. For example, single-mode fiber has typical losses of 0.5 dB/km at 1310 nm and 0.4 dB/km at 1550 nm, while multimode fiber has higher losses, around 3 dB/km at 850 nm .

Methods for Measuring Loss

1. Insertion Loss Testing

This method uses a light source and power meter to measure the total loss from one end of the fiber to the other. The steps include:

  • Fiber attenuation: depends on fiber type and wavelength, e.g., 0.5 dB/km for 1310 nm single-mode fiber .

2. Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR)

An OTDR sends light pulses through the fiber and measures reflections caused by splices, connectors, or faults. It provides:

  • Fiber length
  • Loss per segment
  • Identification of high-loss points or defects Best practices for OTDR testing include using launch and receive cables to ensure accurate readings, testing at multiple wavelengths (e.g., 850 nm, 1310 nm, 1550 nm), and analyzing the OTDR trace to locate splices, bends, or breaks .

Calculating Total Link Loss

The total link loss can be estimated using the formula: Total Link Loss (dB) = Cable Attenuation + Connector Loss + Splice Loss Where:

  • Cable Attenuation (dB) = Attenuation Coefficient (dB/km) × Fiber Length (km)
  • Connector Loss (dB) = Number of Connector Pairs × Connector Loss Allowance
  • Splice Loss (dB) = Number of Splices × Splice Loss Allowance This calculation provides a loss budget, which helps determine if the fiber link meets performance standards or requires troubleshooting.

  • Always clean connectors before testing to reduce extrinsic losses.
