Multimode fiber is duplex

Multimode duplex fiber is a fiber optic cable with two strands of multimode fiber, enabling simultaneous bidirectional data transmission over short-to-medium distances.

Overview

Multimode duplex fiber consists of two strands of multimode optical fiber, typically bundled in a single cable or zip-cord style, allowing simultaneous bidirectional communication between devices such as servers, switches, and workstations . Unlike simplex fiber, which carries data in only one direction, duplex fiber supports high-volume, two-way data transfer, making it ideal for modern network applications.

Core Sizes and Bandwidth

Multimode fiber comes in two main core sizes: 50/125 µm and 62.5/125 µm. The first number represents the core diameter, which carries the light, and the second number is the cladding diameter, which is always 125 µm .

  • 50 µm fiber: Offers higher bandwidth and longer link lengths, especially at 850 nm wavelength, making it suitable for new installations and backbone networks.
  • 62.5 µm fiber: Slightly lower bandwidth, commonly used in legacy systems, but still compatible with 50 µm fiber in many applications .

Applications

Multimode duplex fiber is widely used in:

  • Data centers and enterprise networks for high-speed connections between servers and switches
  • Fibre Channel and Ethernet networks, supporting speeds up to 10 Gbps over short-to-medium distances
  • IoT and cloud-based systems, where consistent, high-throughput connections are critical It is suitable for indoor and outdoor installations, with cables available in OM3 or OM4 ratings, which are optimized for 10/40/100 Gb networks .

Connectors and Compatibility

Multimode duplex fiber supports various connector types, including SC, LC, ST, and FC.

  • SC connectors: 2.5 mm ferrule, push-pull design, widely used in duplex applications
  • LC connectors: 1.25 mm ferrule, space-saving, high-performance option
  • ST connectors: Bayonet-style, older standard but still in use for some networks

Advantages

  • Bidirectional data transfer ensures efficient communication between devices
  • High throughput over short-to-medium distances
  • Compatibility with existing multimode networks and backward compatibility with 62.5 µm fiber
  • Flexibility in connector types and cable styles for diverse network setups In summary, multimode duplex fiber is a versatile, high-performance solution for modern networking, providing reliable, bidirectional data transmission with options for different core sizes, connectors, and installation environments.
