Understanding the Splitter Types

Fiber optic splitters are passive optical devices that divide an input optical signal into multiple outputs. There are two main types:

  • Fused Biconical Taper (FBT) Splitters: Made by fusing and tapering two fibers together, typically enclosed in a protective metal or plastic tube. Common for small split ratios like 1×2 or 1×4 .
  • Planar Lightwave Circuit (PLC) Splitters: Fabricated on a quartz substrate using lithography, suitable for larger split ratios (1×8, 1×16, 1×32). They are more sensitive to handling and usually encased in a compact module .

Tools and Precautions

  • Tools: Precision screwdrivers, fiber strippers, tweezers, magnifying glass, and a clean workspace.
  • Precautions:
    • Always wear eye protection; fiber shards can be hazardous.
    • Avoid bending fibers beyond their minimum bend radius.
    • Work in a dust-free environment to prevent contamination.
    • Handle the splitter module gently to prevent cracking the substrate (PLC) or breaking fused fibers (FBT).

Disassembly Steps (General Guidelines)

  1. Identify the Splitter Type: Check if it is PLC or FBT. PLC splitters are usually in a rectangular module, while FBT splitters are cylindrical.
  2. Remove the Outer Housing: Carefully pry open the plastic or metal casing. For PLC splitters, some modules are glued, so gentle heating may soften the adhesive.
  3. Expose the Internal Fibers: Once the casing is removed, locate the input and output fibers. Avoid pulling on the fibers directly.
  4. Separate the Fibers:
    • For FBT splitters, the fused section is extremely fragile. Do not attempt to separate the fused fibers; instead, inspect or test the fibers outside the enclosure.
    • For PLC splitters, the waveguide substrate is delicate. Avoid touching the glass surface; use tweezers to handle fibers.
  5. Label and Document: If you plan to reassemble, label each fiber and document the connections to maintain the correct split configuration.

Testing and Reassembly

  • After disassembly, inspect fibers for microbends, cracks, or contamination.
  • Clean fibers with isopropyl alcohol and lint-free wipes.
  • Reassemble the housing carefully, ensuring fibers are not stressed or bent sharply.

Important Notes

  • Disassembly is generally not recommended for PLC splitters due to their delicate internal structure; they are designed to be maintenance-free.
  • FBT splitters can sometimes be opened for inspection, but the fused section cannot be separated without destroying the splitter.
  • Always follow industry standards such as ITU-T G.671 and Telcordia GR-1209/GR-1221 for handling and testing optical components . By following these guidelines, you can safely inspect or troubleshoot a fiber optic splitter without compromising its performance.
