Standard Configuration of Electrical Distribution Boxes for Factory Equipment

Factory electrical distribution boxes are configured with main isolators, circuit breakers, RCDs/RCBOs, busbars, and metering devices according to IEC/NEMA standards to ensure safe and reliable power distribution.

Main Distribution Board (MDB)

The MDB is the primary point of power distribution in a factory. Standard configurations include:

  • Configuration 1: Main Isolator Switch → Main RCD → Subcircuit Isolator Switch → Subcircuit Circuit Breaker (MCB/MCCB)
  • Configuration 2: Main Isolator Switch → Main Circuit Breaker (MCB/MCCB) → Subcircuit Isolator Switch → Subcircuit RCD The MDB typically includes voltmeter, ammeter, kWh meter, and other instruments for energy monitoring. When current transformers (CTs) are used, their secondary circuits must be connected to the protective earth and never left open-circuited ( ).

Sub-Distribution Board (SDB)

The SDB distributes power to specific zones or machinery. Standard components include:

  • Main Isolator Switch → Main Circuit Breaker (MCB/MCCB)
  • Subcircuit Isolator Switch → Subcircuit Circuit Breaker (MCB/MCCB) SDBs provide both control (ON/OFF switching) and protection (overload, short-circuit) functions ( ).

Final Circuit Switch Box

For individual circuits, the final switch box must include:

  • Isolator Switch
  • Circuit Breaker (MCB/MCCB) or Fuse
  • Residual Current Device (RCD) If an RCBO is used, it combines overcurrent and residual-current protection, eliminating the need for a separate breaker or fuse ( ).

Protective Devices and Layout

  • MCBs protect against overload and short-circuit currents.
  • RCDs/RCCBs/RCBOs provide earth-leakage protection to reduce shock and fire risk.
