Calibration of Optical Power Meters

Traceable Calibration: Calibration ensures the meter readings correspond to known optical power values under specified conditions. The device under test (DUT) is compared to a working standard, which is itself calibrated against a reference standard traceable to national standards such as NIST in the U.S., PTB in Germany, or NPL in the UK . Calibration Procedure:

  1. Select Wavelength: Use the wavelength corresponding to your fiber system (commonly 850, 1310, or 1550 nm) because sensor response varies with wavelength .
  2. Use Appropriate Fiber/Connector: Calibrate the meter with the same fiber type and connector as in actual use to minimize errors caused by reflected power .
  3. Reference Standard: Use a transfer standard calibrated with a laser source or calorimeter to set the meter's absolute power reference .

Operating an Optical Power Meter
