Core Switch Role

A core switch is a high-capacity, high-performance Layer 3 switch positioned at the backbone of an Ethernet network, responsible for aggregating traffic from distribution switches and forwarding it rapidly across the LAN or toward the data center . It functions as the central nervous system of the network, ensuring ultra-low latency, maximum throughput, and uninterrupted packet forwarding . Hierarchical Network Design

Ethernet networks often follow a three-tier hierarchical model:

  • Core Layer: The backbone of the network, consisting of high-capacity switches that route and switch massive amounts of data. Multiple core switches are typically deployed to prevent congestion and ensure redundancy .
