Fusion Splicers

A fusion splicer is a specialized tool used to permanently join two optical fibers end-to-end by precisely aligning them and then fusing the fiber cores together using an electric arc or laser pulse . This process, called fusion splicing, produces extremely low signal loss (typically around 0.05 dB) and high durability, making it ideal for long-distance or high-performance networks . Fusion splicers require a precision cleaver to prepare the fiber ends and are commonly used in single-mode and multimode fiber installations . The resulting splice is permanent and cannot be easily disconnected.

Fiber Optic Couplers

A fiber optic coupler, on the other hand, is a passive optical device that splits or combines light signals between multiple fibers. Couplers are used to distribute optical signals in networks, such as splitting a single input into two or more outputs, or combining signals from multiple fibers into one . Unlike fusion splicing, couplers do not permanently join fibers; they manage the distribution of optical power and are essential in applications like optical signal monitoring, network branching, or wavelength division multiplexing.
