Installation method of trunk optical cable

Proper trunk optical cable installation ensures high performance, reliability, and longevity of fiber optic networks.

Overview of Trunk Cables

Trunk cables are essential for fiber optic networks, serving as the main conduit for multiple fiber connections. They can be pre-assembled with connectors such as LC (Lucent Connector) or SC (Subscriber Connector), and are available in various fiber types including OM1, OM2, OM3, OM4, OM5, and OS2, optimized for different bandwidths and distances . Pre-assembled cables reduce splicing effort and allow faster installation .

Preparation Before Installation

  • Inspect the work area: Ensure the path is clear of sharp objects, debris, or obstacles that could damage the cable .
  • Check cable specifications: Verify the minimum bend radius, tensile strength, and temperature limits for the specific trunk cable .
  • Protective material: Keep protective coverings on reels until installation to prevent damage .
  • Signage and safety: Mark the work area and ensure proper signaling, especially in manholes or public spaces .

Handling and Pulling Techniques

  • Figure-8 method: Lay the cable in a figure-8 pattern on the ground to prevent twisting and kinking. Each loop should be 2–4 meters in diameter depending on cable stiffness .
  • Pulling grips: Use factory-installed pulling grips to protect connectors and fibers. Never exceed the maximum tensile rating of the grip (e.g., 44.5 kg for some MTP grips) and avoid pulling by the connector legs .
  • Bend radius: Do not bend the cable more sharply than its minimum recommended radius, and avoid crushing or kinking .
  • Swivel-pulling eyes: For long pulls, use swivel-pulling eyes to prevent additional twisting .
  • Multiple installers: For long or complex pulls, have one installer at each end and one in the center to guide the cable and prevent damage .

Installation in Raceways and Cabinets

  • Routing: Avoid loops in raceways and keep fiber separate from copper cables to prevent excessive loading .
  • Attachment: Use plastic clamps with large surface areas to secure cables without crushing the sheath .
  • Right-angle bends: Route cables carefully through cabinets and raceways, respecting bend radius limits .

Splicing and Connections

  • Cable reserves: Leave sufficient slack in the form of figure-8 or circular loops for future maintenance .
  • Splice protection: Use splice protectors and handle fibers carefully to avoid damage .
  • Connector cleaning: Ensure end faces are clean before mating, using residue-free cleaning fluids or optimized dust caps .
  • Patch cords: Connect from distributors to equipment using patch cords or direct connector mounting when possible .

Safety and Environmental Considerations

  • Temperature: Respect maximum installation and storage temperatures specified for the cable .
  • Mechanical stress: Avoid excessive bending, twisting, or pulling forces .
  • Lubricants: Use non-abrasive cable lubricants if necessary to ease installation .
  • Supervision: Assign trained personnel to monitor cable handling, laying, and connection tasks . By following these guidelines, trunk optical cables can be installed efficiently while maintaining signal integrity, minimizing attenuation, and ensuring long-term network reliability .
