Single-mode fiber optic dual-mode transmission distance

Single-mode fiber supports long-distance transmission up to hundreds of kilometers, while multimode fiber is limited to short distances, typically under 2 km.

Single-Mode Fiber (SMF)

Single-mode fiber has a small core (~9 µm) that allows light to propagate in a single mode, minimizing modal dispersion and enabling long-distance, high-speed communication . Typical characteristics include:

  • Wavelengths: 1310 nm for medium-range and 1550 nm for long-range transmission .
  • Maximum Distance: Can exceed 100 km without amplification; with dispersion-compensating fibers or optical amplifiers, distances can reach several hundred kilometers, as in submarine cables .
  • Bandwidth: Very high, as single-mode fibers are not limited by modal dispersion .
  • Applications: Long-haul telecommunications, metropolitan area networks, and high-speed backbone networks .

Multimode Fiber (MMF)

Multimode fiber has a larger core (50–62.5 µm), allowing multiple light modes to propagate. This leads to modal dispersion, which limits both distance and bandwidth . Key points include:

  • Wavelengths: Typically 850 nm and 1300 nm .
  • Maximum Distance: Usually up to 2 km for 100 Mbps; for higher speeds like 10 Gbps, distances are much shorter (tens to hundreds of meters depending on fiber grade, e.g., OM1–OM5), .
  • Bandwidth: Limited by modal dispersion; higher bandwidth often reduces maximum distance .
  • Applications: Short-range connections such as data center interconnects, LAN backbones, and campus networks .

Factors Affecting Fiber Distance

  1. Attenuation: Signal loss due to scattering, absorption, bending, and impurities; lower attenuation allows longer distances .
  2. Dispersion:
    • Chromatic dispersion: Affects single-mode fiber, causing pulse broadening over long distances .
    • Modal dispersion: Dominates in multimode fiber, limiting distance .
  3. Connectors and Splices: Each introduces signal loss; high-quality, low-loss components help maintain longer distances .
  4. Wavelength Selection: Longer wavelengths (1550 nm) in single-mode fiber reduce attenuation and support longer distances .

Summary

  • Single-mode fiber: Ideal for long-distance, high-speed communication; distances can exceed 100 km without amplification and reach hundreds of kilometers with optical amplifiers .
  • Multimode fiber: Suitable for short-range, high-bandwidth applications; distances are typically under 2 km and decrease with higher data rates . Choosing between single-mode and multimode fiber depends on distance requirements, bandwidth needs, and cost considerations, with single-mode preferred for long-haul networks and multimode for cost-effective short-range connections .
