Single-Mode Fiber

Single-mode fiber optic cables have a very narrow core, typically around 8–10 microns in diameter, allowing only one mode of light to propagate. This design minimizes modal dispersion, enabling long-distance transmission with high signal integrity and superior bandwidth, making it ideal for backbone networks, telecommunications, and long-haul applications . Single-mode fibers usually operate with laser light sources at wavelengths of 1310 nm or 1550 nm, and are categorized as OS1 (indoor) or OS2 (outdoor) based on attenuation and environmental suitability . They are more expensive than multimode fibers but provide longer reach and higher performance.

Multimode Fiber

Multimode fiber has a larger core, typically 50 µm or 62.5 µm, which allows multiple light modes to propagate simultaneously. This makes it suitable for shorter distances, such as within buildings, data centers, or campus networks . Multimode fibers often use VCSEL light sources at 850 nm, and their bandwidth is limited by modal dispersion. Modern multimode fibers (OM1–OM5) support higher effective modal bandwidths and can use shortwave wavelength division multiplexing (SWDM) to increase capacity .

Dual-Fiber and Single-Fiber Modules

Dual-fiber modules use two separate fibers: one for transmitting and one for receiving data. This setup is straightforward, reliable, and supports full-duplex communication, making it easier to install and maintain . In contrast, single-fiber (BiDi) modules use a single fiber for both transmitting and receiving by employing different wavelengths, saving space and cost but requiring compatible transceivers . Both single-mode and multimode fibers can be used with these modules depending on distance and speed requirements.
