Using an optical fiber sensor involves proper installation of the fiber, connecting it to the amplifier or control unit, adjusting sensing parameters, and powering the system for detection.

Basic Setup

  1. Identify Sensor Components: A typical fiber optic sensor includes a fiber unit (emitter and receiver or a single reflective fiber), a fiber amplifier or control unit, and a light source such as a laser diode or LED . The fiber may be plastic or glass, depending on the application and environmental conditions.
  2. Mount the Fiber: Secure the fiber using clamps or holders to prevent movement. For reflective sensors, position the fiber so that the light beam is directed toward the target. For through-beam sensors, align the emitter and receiver fibers facing each other .
  3. Connect to Amplifier/Control Unit: Plug the fiber ends into the corresponding ports on the amplifier. Ensure the transmitter and receiver are correctly connected if using a through-beam type. Lock the fibers in place using the sensor's locking mechanism .

Electrical Connection and Power

  1. Supply Power: Connect the sensor to the appropriate voltage supply, typically 220 VAC or as specified by the manufacturer. NPN or PNP type sensors have specific wiring for +, –, and output terminals .
  2. Output Connection: The sensor output is usually connected to a relay or control system. When an object enters the sensing range, the relay activates, providing a signal to the connected system .

Calibration and Adjustment

  1. Adjust Sensing Range: Use the adjustment port or potentiometer on the amplifier to set the desired sensing distance. Many amplifiers have a dual display showing signal level and threshold for precise calibration .
  2. Mode Selection: Choose between Light ON or Dark ON modes depending on whether the sensor should activate when the target is present or absent .
  3. Test Detection: Place a target in the sensing area and observe the relay operation or LED indicators. Fine-tune the threshold and alignment for reliable detection .

  • Non-contact Sensing: Fiber sensors detect objects without physical contact, making them ideal for delicate or moving targets .
  • Environmental Resistance: Fiber units are resistant to vibration, temperature, and electrical noise, allowing installation in harsh conditions .
  • Fast Response: Light-based detection ensures rapid response times, suitable for high-speed applications .
  • Multiplexing: Multiple sensors can be connected along a single fiber using wavelength or time-domain techniques for distributed sensing .
