Comparison of Flame Retardant Performance of Communication Corrugated Conduits

Halogen-free polypropylene (PP) conduits with tailored FR additives offer superior flame retardancy and low smoke emission compared to traditional PVC and standard HDPE conduits, while maintaining mechanical and weathering performance.

Material and Flame Retardant Systems

PVC Conduits: Traditionally used for cable protection, PVC provides inherent flame retardancy but emits thick smoke and toxic gases during combustion, raising safety concerns in confined or public spaces . Halogen-Free PP Conduits: Polypropylene can be modified with halogen-free additives to achieve flame retardancy while minimizing smoke. Two main FR systems have been developed:

  • Cyclic phosphonate ester + N-alkoxy hindered amine (NOR-HAS): Achieves UL94 V0 rating, operates in both gas and condensed phases, and provides long-term UV/heat stabilization .
  • Hypophosphite + bromine + NOR-HAS: Achieves UL94 V2 rating, effective at lower additive loadings, and classified as Halogen-Free Low Smoke (HFLS) conduits .
