A fiber optic vibration sensing element uses an optical fiber as the core sensing medium. Vibrations applied to the fiber cause changes in light intensity, phase, polarization, or frequency, which are then measured to determine the vibration characteristics . These sensors are non-electrical, immune to electromagnetic interference, and can operate in harsh environments, making them suitable for industrial, structural, and security applications .

Types of Fiber Optic Vibration Sensors

  1. Intensity-Modulated Sensors: The simplest type, where vibrations cause microbends or deformations in the fiber, altering the transmitted light intensity. These are cost-effective but have lower sensitivity and non-linear response .
  2. Phase-Modulated Sensors: More complex, measuring changes in the phase of light caused by vibrations. They provide higher accuracy and linearity but require sophisticated demodulation techniques and are more expensive .
  3. Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) Sensors: Use periodic variations in the fiber's refractive index to detect strain or vibration. FBG sensors are highly sensitive, can be multiplexed, and are suitable for distributed or quasi-distributed sensing .
  4. Distributed Fiber Optic Vibration Sensing (DVS/DAS): Uses single-mode fiber to continuously monitor vibrations along the entire fiber length, often up to 60 km. These systems detect, locate, and analyze vibrations in real time, making them ideal for perimeter security, pipeline monitoring, and infrastructure protection .

Working Principle

The sensing element typically works by modulating light in response to mechanical disturbances:

  • Microbend Sensors: The fiber is bent periodically between structured plates. Applied vibrations deform the fiber, coupling light from core modes to cladding modes, changing transmitted intensity .
  • Phase-Sensitive Sensors: Vibrations alter the optical path length, causing phase shifts in the light, which are measured using interferometric or backscattering techniques .
  • Distributed Systems: Detect Rayleigh backscattered light along the fiber. Vibrations change the scattering pattern, allowing precise localization and characterization of the disturbance .
