Production of Flame-Retardant Plastic Optical Fiber Channels

Flame-retardant plastic optical fiber channels are produced using specialized halogen-free plastics, reinforced sheathing, and layered protective structures to ensure fire safety, mechanical integrity, and compliance with modern standards.

Materials and Flame-Retardant Mechanisms

Flame-retardant optical fiber channels typically use halogen-free engineering plastics such as ABS or LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) for the main body and fiber outlets, reducing toxic smoke and corrosive gas release during fires . Flame retardancy is achieved through several mechanisms:

  • Intumescence: Certain additives cause the plastic to swell and form a char layer, insulating the fiber from heat .
  • CO2 Release: Non-halogen additives decompose to release carbon dioxide, diluting oxygen and slowing flame propagation .
  • Inorganic Fillers: Aluminum hydroxide (ATH) or magnesium hydroxide (MH) absorb heat and release water vapor, cooling the material and reducing flammable gas concentration .

Structural Design

The channels are designed to protect fibers mechanically while maintaining a safe bend radius:

  • Closed or semi-closed structures fully protect fibers from physical damage .
  • Rounded corners and full-arc designs ensure the fiber bend radius remains above 40 mm, preventing signal loss .
  • Layered sheathing may include ceramic fiber tapes, mica tapes, and inner flame-retardant sheaths to enhance fire resistance .
  • Separate main and branch channels allow organized routing and flexible installation .

Production Process

  1. Core Preparation: Optical fibers are placed in loose tubes filled with fiber paste to prevent microbending and maintain optical performance .
  2. Sheath Extrusion: Flame-retardant inner sheaths are extruded over the fiber bundles, sometimes embedding reinforcing members for mechanical strength .
  3. Layering: Additional protective layers, such as mica tape or ceramic sheathing, are applied to improve fire resistance and thermal insulation .
  4. Outer Sheath Extrusion: The final LSZH or halogen-free plastic outer sheath is extruded, providing mechanical protection and flame retardancy .
  5. Testing and Certification: Finished channels are tested by Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories (NRTL) to ensure compliance with standards like NEC, IEC60332, and BS6387 .

Applications and Advantages

Flame-retardant plastic optical fiber channels are widely used in indoor installations, tunnels, subway stations, and industrial environments where fire safety is critical. Key advantages include:

  • High flame resistance and low smoke emission .
  • Mechanical protection with flexible installation options .
  • Compliance with international fire safety standards .
  • Reduced environmental and health risks due to halogen-free materials . By combining advanced materials, layered protective structures, and rigorous testing, these channels ensure both optical performance and fire safety, making them suitable for modern communication infrastructure.
