Fiber optic cable reel length detection
During the on-site inspection of optical cables, the fiber attenuation constant and fiber length should be tested, and cracks and non-uniformity along the length should be carefully checked. An optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) is generally used for inspection. I've seen it happen on FTTH builds in rural Mississippi, on middle-mile routes through the hill. Plan fiber optic cable reel lengths around the actual route, installation method, splice locations, handling limits and delivery conditions—not total project quantity alone. The distance measured should be close to that listed as the length of the cable on the reel.
