Fundamentals of Fiber Bragg Gratings

A standard Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) consists of a periodic modulation of the refractive index along the core of an optical fiber, acting as a wavelength-selective mirror. Light at the Bragg wavelength is reflected, while other wavelengths pass through. The Bragg wavelength is determined by the effective refractive index of the fiber core and the grating period. FBGs are widely used for strain, temperature, and pressure sensing, as well as in optical filtering and communication systems .

What Makes a Grating "Chirped"?

A Chirped Fiber Bragg Grating differs from a standard FBG because its grating period varies along the fiber length. This variation, called a "chirp," allows different wavelengths to be reflected at different positions along the grating. The chirp can be linear or nonlinear, and it introduces wavelength-dependent group delay, which is crucial for applications like dispersion compensation in optical communications and high-resolution distributed sensing .

Fabrication Techniques

CFBGs can be fabricated using several methods:

  • UV Writing with a Chirped Phase Mask: A UV laser passes through a phase mask with a varying period, imprinting the chirp onto the fiber.
  • UV Writing with a Strained Fiber: Controlled strain is applied during UV exposure to modify the grating period.
  • Point-by-Point Writing: Individual grating planes are written with a focused UV laser, allowing complex chirp profiles.
  • Femtosecond Laser Writing: Directly writes gratings into the fiber core without UV sensitization, offering high precision and flexibility .

CFBGs are versatile and find applications in multiple fields:

  • Sensing: Distributed measurement of strain, temperature, and pressure with millimeter-scale spatial resolution.
