The function of a single-fiber optical connector module

A single-fiber optical connector module enables bidirectional data transmission over a single optical fiber by converting electrical signals to optical signals and using different wavelengths for sending and receiving data.

Core Function

A single-fiber optical module, often referred to as a BiDi (bidirectional) SFP or QSFP28 transceiver, serves as a bridge between electrical network devices and optical fiber networks, performing optoelectronic conversion. It converts electrical signals from switches, routers, or other network equipment into optical signals for transmission over fiber, and simultaneously converts incoming optical signals back into electrical signals for the receiving device .

Bidirectional Transmission

Unlike traditional dual-fiber modules that require separate fibers for transmitting (TX) and receiving (RX), a single-fiber module uses Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) to carry both directions of data on a single fiber. For example, one wavelength (e.g., 1310 nm) is used to transmit data, while a complementary wavelength (e.g., 1550 nm) is used to receive data. A compact WDM coupler inside the module combines and separates these wavelengths, allowing full-duplex communication over one fiber strand .

Internal Components

The module typically contains:

  • Transmitter Optical Sub-Assembly (TOSA): Converts electrical signals into optical signals using a laser diode or LED .
  • Receiver Optical Sub-Assembly (ROSA): Converts incoming optical signals back into electrical signals using a photodetector .
  • Control and Amplification Circuits: Include laser drivers, limiting amplifiers, and automatic power control (APC) circuits to maintain stable output power and signal quality across temperature variations .
  • Optical Interface: Connects to the fiber via standard connectors like LC or MPO.

Advantages

  • Fiber Efficiency: Reduces fiber usage by half, which is critical in environments with limited fiber infrastructure .
  • Cost Savings: Lowers deployment costs by minimizing fiber procurement, trenching, and maintenance.
  • Simplified Network Design: Reduces cable density and simplifies patching in high-density racks or metro networks.
  • High Performance: Supports high-speed data transmission (1G, 10G, 100G) without compromising link reliability or distance .

Applications

Single-fiber optical modules are widely used in metropolitan area networks (MANs), telecom access networks, enterprise campus links, and 5G aggregation networks, where fiber resources are scarce or expensive . They are particularly valuable in high-density or fiber-constrained environments, enabling efficient network expansion and cost-effective deployment. In summary, a single-fiber optical connector module enables efficient, bidirectional optical communication over a single fiber, combining optoelectronic conversion with WDM technology to maximize fiber utilization while maintaining high-speed, reliable network performance.
