Laying and Protection of Direct-Buried Optical Cables

Proper handling, adherence to bend radius, controlled pulling tension, and environmental protection are essential for safe and effective direct-buried optical cable installation.

General Safety and Preparation

Before installation, all personnel should be familiar with OSHA regulations and company-specific safety procedures for buried cable operations. Cable reels must be inspected for damage, nails, broken flanges, or crossovers, and stored securely to prevent vandalism or environmental damage. Protective coverings on reels should remain in place until installation begins, and the installation area should be cleared of sharp objects or debris that could damage the cable .

Handling and Deployment

  • Figure-8 Coiling: When removing cable from the reel, use a figure-8 configuration to prevent kinking or twisting. Each loop should be approximately 1.5–2.4 meters (5–8 ft) in diameter, with a total length of about 4.5 meters (15 ft) per figure-8 .
  • Avoid Sharp Bends: Maintain the minimum bend radius specified by the manufacturer, typically expressed as a multiple of the cable diameter. Exceeding this can damage fibers and degrade performance .
  • Pulling Tension: Do not exceed the maximum recommended pulling tension, often around 600 lbs (2,700 N) for standard loose tube cables. Use proper pulling grips and avoid sudden jerks .
  • Surface Protection: When laying cable on pavement or other surfaces, use barricades or cones to prevent vehicular or pedestrian damage .

Burial and Environmental Considerations

  • Trenching and Plowing: Direct-buried cables can be installed via trenching or plowing. Ensure the trench is free of rocks and sharp objects, and maintain proper depth according to local regulations .
  • Warning Tape: Place a bright orange warning tape approximately 30 cm (12 in) above the cable to alert future excavators .
  • Temperature and Moisture: Respect the maximum installation and storage temperatures specified for the cable. LSZH sheathed cables are particularly sensitive to mechanical stress at high temperatures .

Cable Protection

  • Slack and Splice Points: Coil slack horizontally in the trench and locate splice points in advance. Use hand holes with lockable lids where possible .
  • Mechanical Stress: Minimize crushing or pressure points, especially at crossing points or when cables are coiled. Armored cables crossing each other should be carefully aligned to avoid high-pressure points .
  • Transition Points: At transitions between direct-buried sections and conduits, uncoil the cable using a figure-8 pattern to prevent twisting or kinking .

Standards and Recommendations

Follow ITU-T L.101 and IEC 60794-3-11 standards for buried optical fiber cables, which specify construction, testing, and performance criteria suitable for direct-buried applications . Always coordinate with the manufacturer for cable-specific requirements and environmental conditions. By following these precautions, installers can ensure long-term reliability, minimal signal loss, and reduced risk of physical damage to direct-buried optical fiber cables.
