What They Are

The most common type is the Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensor, which is widely used due to its compact size, immunity to electromagnetic interference, and ability to operate in harsh environments .

How They Work

FBG sensors operate based on the Bragg diffraction principle. When broadband light is sent through the fiber, the grating reflects a specific wavelength, called the Bragg wavelength, which shifts in response to changes in strain, temperature, pressure, or other physical parameters . The reflected wavelength changes because the grating period and the refractive index of the fiber core are affected by these environmental factors. This allows the sensor to convert mechanical or thermal changes into measurable optical signals .

Structure

An optical fiber used in FBG sensors typically consists of three layers:

  • Core: The central part where light is guided and the grating is inscribed.
  • Cladding: Surrounds the core with a lower refractive index to confine light via total internal reflection.
  • Protective jacket: Shields the fiber from mechanical damage and environmental stress .
