What is an AOC Optical Module?

An AOC (Active Optical Cable) integrates optical fiber with modules at both ends that contain optical engines. These modules perform electrical-to-optical conversion at the transmitting end and optical-to-electrical conversion at the receiving end, allowing devices to communicate directly over the fiber cable . Unlike traditional optical transceivers, the fiber is permanently attached to the modules, forming a fixed-length, plug-and-play cable assembly .

How It Works

  1. Electrical input from a network interface card (NIC) or switch enters the AOC module.
  2. A laser or optical transmitter converts the electrical signal into light pulses.
  3. The light travels through the fiber optic cable integrated within the AOC.
  4. At the other end, a photodiode or optical receiver converts the light back into an electrical signal for the receiving device . This process allows longer reach than copper DAC cables, immunity to electromagnetic interference (EMI), and reduced cable weight and thickness, which improves airflow in data centers .
