Requirements for cable fixing distance in cable trays

Cables in trays should be secured at regular intervals: every 3–5 meters for horizontal runs and every 1.5 meters for vertical runs, with proper tray spacing and clearances to ensure safety, airflow, and maintenance access.

Horizontal Cable Runs

Cables in horizontal tray sections should be secured at the start, end, and at every 3–5 meters along straight runs. Additional securing is required at bends to maintain order and prevent stress on the cables . Binding ties should not exceed 1.5 meters apart, ensuring even tension and preventing sagging . For flexible systems, a small initial offset (typically 2%) is recommended to accommodate thermal expansion and prevent displacement .

Vertical Cable Runs

For vertical tray sections, cables should be secured at the top and every 1.5 meters. Long vertical runs exceeding 32 meters should include strain relief sections, often by offsetting the cable by at least two cable diameters or including short horizontal sections to relieve tension . This prevents excessive stress and potential cable failure.

Tray Spacing and Clearances

  • Parallel trays: Maintain at least 0.6 meters between trays at the same height for maintenance access and airflow .
  • Power vs signal trays: Keep a minimum of 0.5 meters separation to reduce electromagnetic interference (EMI); shielding can reduce this to 0.3 meters .
  • Vertical spacing for floor-mounted trays: Minimum 150 mm to prevent obstruction and allow ventilation .
  • Height above ground: Ideally 2.2 meters to ensure safe working conditions .
  • Top clearance: Maintain at least 0.3 meters from ceilings or obstructions .
  • Tray fill rate: Should not exceed 50% to allow proper airflow and prevent overheating .

Bend and Support Considerations

Cables must be secured on either side of bends, and the internal radius of bends should not be less than the minimum bending radius for the cable . For cable trays with rungs, a spacing of 150–230 mm (6–9 inches) is recommended to support cables and maintain organization .

Best Practices

  • Lay cables straight and orderly, avoiding overlaps or crossings .
  • Use fire-resistant supports for all cable types to comply with safety regulations .
  • Ensure trays and supports are installed by competent personnel familiar with electrical installation standards .
  • Include strain relief and offsets in long vertical runs to prevent tension buildup . Following these guidelines ensures mechanical stability, fire safety, proper ventilation, and ease of maintenance for cable tray installations.
