Brazil High-Speed Optical Cable Project

Brazil is advancing multiple high-speed optical cable initiatives, including domestic submarine networks, Amazon riverbed deployments, and a proposed BRICS international cable to enhance connectivity and digital sovereignty.

Campos Basin Optical Cable

The Petrobras Campos Basin project involves a 440 km repeaterless trunk-and-branch fiber optic system linking 12 oil and gas platforms to landing stations in Anchieta, Espirito Santo, and Barra do Furado, Rio de Janeiro. The system uses advanced repeaterless technology with Remote Optically Pumped Amplifiers (ROPA) and Raman amplification, modernizing connectivity for Petrobras and enabling future platform expansion. Pioneer Consulting is providing engineering, marine route survey, and installation oversight, with service expected by early 2025 .

Norte Conectado Program

In northern Brazil, the Norte Conectado Program aims to improve communications infrastructure and network resilience across the Amazon region. Prysmian Group is supplying 770 km of MINISUB repeaterless submarine fiber cables connecting Macapá to Santarém and Alenquer. The project will serve 9.2 million households and is designed to minimize environmental impact by deploying cables along riverbeds using non-intrusive techniques. The high-fiber-count cables are manufactured in Germany and deployed in four separate links to ensure reliable data flow .

Belem-Fortaleza Subsea Network

Global Fiber, in partnership with Padtec and Satelital, is constructing a subsea “festoon” network linking Belém and Fortaleza, connecting multiple coastal points without immediate amplification. This network is part of a larger Amazon region project extending to Lima, Peru, and other border areas, aiming to reduce digital gaps in remote locations. The Belem-Fortaleza section is expected to be operational by the end of 2025 .

BRICS Submarine Cable Proposal

Brazil has proposed a high-speed submarine cable network connecting BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) with a feasibility study planned for 2025. The initiative, endorsed in the Rio de Janeiro Declaration, seeks to enhance digital sovereignty, reduce reliance on Western-controlled internet routes, and strengthen Global South cooperation. The project emphasizes secure, stable, and independent digital infrastructure while respecting national internet regulations .

Strategic Significance

These projects collectively aim to:

  • Modernize domestic telecommunications and oil & gas connectivity
  • Expand high-speed internet access in remote and environmentally sensitive regions
  • Strengthen Brazil's digital sovereignty and regional collaboration
  • Provide resilient infrastructure for both domestic and international data traffic Brazil's multi-pronged approach demonstrates a commitment to advanced fiber optic technology, environmental responsibility, and strategic digital infrastructure development, positioning the country as a key hub for high-speed connectivity in Latin America and beyond.
