Positioning Principle of Fiber Optic Sensing Technology

Fiber optic position sensors measure the displacement or position of an object by detecting changes in light transmitted through an optical fiber, converting these changes into precise position data.

Working Principle

Fiber optic position sensors operate by transmitting light through an optical fiber and detecting variations caused by the movement of a target object. The core components include an optical fiber, a light source (such as an LED or laser diode), a reflector or sensing element, a light detector, and signal processing electronics .

  1. Optical Fiber: The fiber, made of glass or plastic, guides light from the source to the sensing region using total internal reflection .
  2. Light Source: Emits light pulses into the fiber, which travel along the core to interact with the object whose position is being measured .
  3. Reflection or Modulation Point: A reflector or movable surface attached to the object modulates the light. Movement of the object changes the phase, intensity, or wavelength of the returning light .
  4. Light Detection: A photodetector at the fiber's end measures the returning light and detects changes caused by the object's displacement .
  5. Signal Processing: The detected light variations are processed to calculate the position or displacement of the object. The output can be analog, digital, or in other formats suitable for the application .

Types of Fiber Optic Position Sensors

  • Intrinsic Sensors: The fiber itself acts as the sensing element, and the measurand directly affects the light traveling through the fiber .
  • Extrinsic Sensors: The fiber transmits light to an external sensing element, and modulation occurs outside the fiber .
  • Hybrid Sensors: Combine intrinsic and extrinsic principles, with the fiber both transmitting and receiving modulated light .

Advantages

Fiber optic position sensors offer high sensitivity, immunity to electromagnetic interference, and long-distance signal transmission. They are ideal for precision measurement in harsh environments, including aerospace, automotive, and medical applications .

Summary

The principle of positioning fiber optic sensors relies on converting mechanical movement into measurable changes in light properties within an optical fiber. By analyzing these changes, the sensor provides accurate, non-intrusive, and highly reliable position measurements suitable for demanding industrial and scientific applications .
