What is a CPO Optical Module?

A CPO (Co-Packaged Optics) optical module is an advanced optical interconnect solution where the optical engine—comprising lasers, modulators, photodetectors, and drivers—is co-located with the switching or processing ASIC on the same substrate or interposer, rather than being a separate pluggable module . This co-packaging dramatically shortens high-speed electrical lanes, reducing signal loss, latency, and power consumption while enabling higher aggregate bandwidth . Unlike conventional pluggable transceivers, CPO modules are tightly integrated assemblies optimized for performance rather than hot-swappable convenience .

Role of Optical Chips

Optical chips are the core components of any optical module. They perform three main functions:

  • Signal generation: Lasers such as EML, DFB, or VCSELs provide coherent or short-reach light sources .
  • Signal modulation: Modulators encode electrical signals onto optical carriers, often using PAM4 or higher-order modulation . Silicon photonics chips can integrate modulators, waveguides, and multiplexers for multi-wavelength operation.
  • Signal detection: Photodiodes, typically InGaAs integrated with TIAs, convert optical signals back into electrical signals . In CPO designs, these optical chips are directly integrated with the ASIC, forming a silicon photonics-based photonic integrated circuit (PIC) that supports terabit-scale optical interconnects .

Benefits of CPO

  • Reduced electrical interconnects: Shorter trace lengths between ASIC and optical chips lower signal loss and power consumption .
  • Higher bandwidth density: Multi-wavelength CWDM and DWDM enable bi-directional data transmission over each fiber, supporting 100G, 200G, or 400G per lane .
  • Lower latency and energy use: Co-location reduces the distance signals travel, cutting latency and potentially halving power usage compared to traditional modules .
  • Scalability: Advanced packaging (2.5D/3D integration) and silicon interposers allow stacking and high-density designs for AI and HPC workloads .

Challenges

  • Thermal management: Optical chips generate heat, requiring sophisticated cooling solutions when co-packaged with ASICs .
  • Manufacturing complexity: High-density integration and precise alignment of photonic and electronic components make production more challenging .
  • Serviceability: Unlike pluggable modules, replacing or inspecting faulty optics in CPO modules is more difficult .

Industry Applications

CPO optical modules are increasingly used in data centers, cloud infrastructure, and high-performance computing (HPC) to meet the demands of AI scale-up architectures . Companies like GlobalFoundries have developed platforms such as the SCALE CPO solution, which supports OCI MSA-compliant optical interconnects with integrated 50-Gbps and 100-Gbps modulators, multi-wavelength DWDM, and advanced packaging for rapid volume production .
