Direct-buried fiber optic cables are engineered to be installed directly into the ground, either in trenches or using vibratory plows, without requiring protective ducts. Two common designs are:

  • Loose Tube Cables: Contain buffer tubes with 12 or 24 fibers, offering high density and durability. They are lightweight and easy to handle, with fiber counts ranging from 12 to 432 fibers. Armored versions provide crush and rodent protection, making them suitable for harsh outdoor conditions (Corning) .
  • Flat Ribbon Cables: Feature fibers arranged in ribbon units, often 12 fibers per ribbon, allowing mass-fusion splicing for faster installation. These cables have thicker, stronger jackets for crush resistance, water-blocking gels or gel-free water-swellable materials, and steel tape armor for added protection. The thermoplastic jacket is UV-resistant and removable for easy handling (STL Tech) .
