Overview of Optical and Electrical Switches

Optical switches control the flow of light in fiber or waveguide networks, operating directly in the optical domain without converting signals to electricity. They can function as simple on/off gates or complex routing devices, such as 2×2 or large 64×64 matrix switches, and are used in applications like laser systems, optical communications, and photonic computing . Optical switches can be controlled electrically (electro-optic, thermo-optic), mechanically (MEMS mirrors), or all-optically using light pulses . Electrical switches, in contrast, convert optical signals to electrical signals, process them at the bit or packet level, and then convert them back to optical signals (OEO conversion). They operate at the packet layer, enabling fine-grained routing, traffic control, and protocol processing .

Hybrid and Port Configurations

Switches may have only electrical ports, only optical ports, or a combination. Hybrid switches allow flexible deployment, using optical ports for high-speed, long-distance connections and electrical ports for local access or packet-level control . Optical circuit switches (OCS) in AI networks, for example, reduce OEO conversions, lower power consumption, and improve latency, with configurations ranging from 64×64 to 512×512 ports .
