Key Indicators of Optical Receivers

The two most important indicators of optical receivers are receiver sensitivity and the required optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR).

Receiver Sensitivity

Receiver sensitivity defines the minimum optical power that a receiver must detect to achieve a specified bit error rate (BER), typically 10⁻⁹ or 10⁻¹², ensuring reliable data transmission . It is usually measured in decibels relative to one milliwatt (dBm). A higher sensitivity allows the receiver to detect weaker signals, enabling longer transmission distances and improved system reliability. Factors affecting sensitivity include detector characteristics (quantum efficiency, dark current, responsivity), amplifier design, and noise sources such as thermal noise, shot noise, and inter-symbol interference (ISI), .

Required Optical Signal-to-Noise Ratio (OSNR)

The required OSNR specifies the minimum ratio of the average optical signal power to the background noise power needed to maintain a target BER . This metric is particularly important in fiber-optic systems with pre-amplified receivers, where background radiation and amplifier noise can degrade signal quality. OSNR is closely related to receiver sensitivity, as a receiver with higher sensitivity can operate effectively at lower OSNR levels, improving tolerance to noise and signal degradation.

Practical Implications

  • System Design: Both receiver sensitivity and OSNR are critical for calculating link budgets, determining maximum transmission distances, and selecting appropriate optical modules .
  • Performance Optimization: High sensitivity and adequate OSNR reduce the likelihood of signal loss, minimize BER, and allow for more efficient network operation .
  • Component Selection: Avalanche photodiode (APD) receivers often provide 2–5 dB better sensitivity than conventional PIN photodiodes, compensating for transmission losses in long-distance links . In summary, receiver sensitivity and required OSNR are the two key indicators that define an optical receiver's ability to detect weak signals and maintain reliable communication, directly impacting system performance, link design, and network stability .
