The Role of Mechanically Laying Optical Cables

Mechanical systems are essential in optical cable laying to control tension, guide the cable, and automate installation for overhead, underground, and submarine deployments.

Overview of Mechanical Systems

Mechanical equipment in optical cable laying ensures safe handling, precise placement, and minimal stress on the fiber. These systems are designed to prevent fiber breakage, excessive attenuation, and deformation during installation. Key mechanical functions include tension control, cable guidance, pulling, blowing, and automated placement.

Overhead Cable Laying

For overhead installations, winding machines and cable laying vehicles are used. The cable is first guided from the ground to the air and attached to support structures using cable hooks or binding wires. The mechanical system includes:

  • Traction sheaves: Provide controlled movement of the cable-laying vehicle along the support line, ensuring the pulling force does not exceed 80% of the cable's maximum allowable tension .
  • Cable transmission pulleys: Guide the fiber into the vehicle and position it accurately beneath the hanging line.
  • Hook lifting and clamping mechanisms: Secure the cable to the support wire, maintaining proper spacing and tension to prevent sagging or excessive strain .
  • Tension control systems: Critical to avoid uneven loading, which can cause attenuation or fiber breakage .

Underground and Duct Installations

For duct or pipeline installations, mechanical systems include:

  • Cable blowing machines: Use compressed air to push or blow the cable through ducts, reducing friction and mechanical stress .
  • Pulling winches and swivel devices: Ensure the cable is pulled without twisting, maintaining the minimum bend radius and preventing core deformation .
  • Lubrication systems: Reduce friction during pulling, especially in long duct runs .
  • Load monitoring: Pitch-compensated load cells measure tension to prevent exceeding the cable's tensile limits .

Submarine Cable Laying

Marine optical cable laying uses specialized cable lay spreads on vessels, which include:

  • Pay-out systems: Control the release of cable from the ship to the seabed.
  • Ploughs and LARS (Launch and Recovery Systems): Mechanically bury the cable in the seabed for protection .
  • Automation and integration with vessel DP systems: Allow precise tension control and real-time monitoring of cable deployment .

Key Considerations

  • Bend radius: Mechanical systems must maintain the cable's minimum bend radius to prevent fiber damage .
  • Tensile limits: Pulling or blowing forces must not exceed the cable's rated tensile strength .
  • Automation: Modern mechanical systems often include automated tension control, real-time monitoring, and remote diagnostics to improve efficiency and reduce human error .
  • Material selection: Overhead systems may use aramid or stainless steel wires for support, balancing flexibility and strength . Mechanical systems are therefore integral to optical cable installation, ensuring the fiber is laid efficiently, safely, and with minimal signal degradation across overhead, underground, and submarine environments.
