How Optical Switches and Splitters Work Together

An optical splitter is a passive device that divides a single input optical signal into multiple outputs or combines multiple inputs into one, without requiring power, using the physics of light propagation and waveguiding . Splitters are commonly used in Passive Optical Networks (PONs) to distribute signals from a central Optical Line Terminal (OLT) to multiple Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) at user locations . Split ratios (e.g., 1×4, 1×32) determine how the input power is divided among outputs, with higher ratios increasing insertion loss . An optical switch, on the other hand, is an active or passive device that can dynamically route optical signals between different fibers. When connected to a splitter, the switch can:

• Select which output ports of the splitter receive the signal, allowing flexible allocation of bandwidth or rerouting in case of maintenance or failure.
• Combine signals from multiple inputs into a single fiber before entering the splitter, enabling network aggregation or testing.
• Enable redundancy and protection schemes, where traffic can be switched to alternate splitter outputs if a fiber path fails.

Deployment Considerations

1. Centralized vs. Distributed Splitting: Splitters can be located centrally near the OLT (centralized) or closer to end users (distributed). An optical switch connected to a centralized splitter allows dynamic reassignment of users to different splitter outputs, while in distributed setups, switching options may be limited .
2. Insertion Loss and Signal Quality: Each splitter introduces insertion loss, which increases with higher split ratios. When an optical switch is added upstream or downstream, careful planning is needed to ensure the combined losses do not degrade signal quality below acceptable thresholds .

In a PON network, a 1×32 PLC splitter may distribute a signal from the OLT to 32 homes. An optical switch placed before the splitter can select which subset of homes receives the signal at any time, or redirect traffic to a backup splitter in case of failure.
