Principle of Fiber Optic Temperature Sensing Device

Fiber optic temperature sensors measure temperature by detecting changes in light properties as it passes through an optical fiber, using materials or structures whose optical characteristics vary with temperature.

Working Principle

Fiber optic temperature sensors operate by transmitting light through an optical fiber to a sensing element, which changes its optical properties in response to temperature variations. These changes are then detected and converted into a temperature reading. The key mechanisms include:

  • Semiconductor Bandgap Shift: Sensors using materials like gallium arsenide (GaAs) rely on the temperature-dependent shrinkage of the semiconductor bandgap. As temperature increases, the absorption edge of the material shifts, modulating the intensity or wavelength of light reflected back through the fiber. A spectrometer measures this shift to calculate temperature accurately .
  • Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG): FBG sensors have periodic variations in the refractive index along the fiber. Temperature changes cause expansion or contraction of the fiber, shifting the wavelength of reflected light. This shift is proportional to the temperature change, allowing precise measurement .
  • Raman and Stokes/Anti-Stokes Scattering: Distributed temperature sensing (DTS) systems use Raman scattering, where the intensity ratio of Stokes to anti-Stokes light varies with temperature. This enables long-range temperature monitoring over kilometers of fiber .
  • Interferometric Sensors: Mach-Zehnder or Fabry-Perot interferometers detect temperature-induced phase changes in light traveling through the fiber. These sensors offer high sensitivity and can measure temperature along with other parameters like strain or pressure .

Advantages

Fiber optic temperature sensors provide several benefits over traditional electrical sensors:

  • Immunity to Electromagnetic Interference (EMI), making them suitable for high-voltage or strong magnetic fields .
  • Non-conductive and intrinsically safe, ideal for explosive or hazardous environments .
  • High precision and fast response, with some sensors achieving ±0.1°C accuracy .
  • Distributed sensing capability, allowing temperature monitoring over long distances or multiple points along a single fiber .

Applications

These sensors are widely used in:

  • Power systems: Monitoring transformer windings and high-voltage equipment.
  • Aerospace and medical fields: MRI-compatible temperature monitoring and spacecraft instrumentation.
  • Industrial and hazardous environments: Nuclear plants, chemical plants, and explosive areas where electrical sensors are unsafe . In summary, fiber optic temperature sensors leverage temperature-dependent changes in light properties—through semiconductor materials, Bragg gratings, or scattering phenomena—to provide accurate, safe, and reliable temperature measurements in environments where conventional sensors may fail.
