TX and RX Basics

TX (Transmit) is the port or function that sends optical signals from a device into the fiber, while RX (Receive) is the port or function that detects incoming optical signals from the fiber and converts them back into electrical signals for the device . For proper communication, the TX of one device must connect to the RX of the other, creating a bidirectional data flow . In dual-fiber systems, one fiber carries TX and the other RX. In single-fiber (BiDi) systems, different wavelengths are used for TX and RX on the same fiber .

Single-Mode Fiber Transceivers

Single-mode SFP transceivers use laser-based transmission over a small core (approximately 9/125µm) to achieve long-distance communication, typically at 1310nm or 1550nm wavelengths . Typical TX power levels for 1310nm modules range from -5 to 0 dBm, with RX sensitivity down to -14 dBm, supporting distances of 10–15 km. For longer distances (40–80+ km), 1550nm modules transmit at 0 to +5 dBm and can receive signals as low as -24 dBm . The optical power budget, calculated as TX Power minus RX Sensitivity, determines the maximum allowable signal loss for reliable communication .

Media Converters and Fiber Links

Media converters extend network distances by converting electrical signals from copper Ethernet to optical signals for fiber. In dual-fiber converters, separate fibers handle TX and RX. In single-fiber BiDi converters, TX and RX signals use different wavelengths (e.g., one device transmits at 1310nm and receives at 1550nm, while the other does the opposite) to allow bidirectional communication over a single strand . Incorrect TX/RX connections or mismatched wavelengths can prevent the link from functioning .

Practical Considerations

  • Optical Attenuation: High TX power on short links can overwhelm RX; optical attenuators may be needed .
  • Connector Cleanliness: Dust or dirt can cause significant signal loss, reducing effective transmission .
  • Environmental Factors: Temperature, humidity, and mechanical stress can affect TX/RX performance .
