The three primary protection methods in relay protection are overcurrent protection, differential protection, and distance protection.

1. Overcurrent Protection

Overcurrent protection operates when the current in a circuit exceeds a predetermined threshold, known as the pickup value. This method is widely used to protect transformers, generators, motors, and transmission lines from excessive currents caused by short circuits or overloads. Overcurrent relays can be instantaneous or time-delayed, allowing coordination with other protective devices to ensure selective tripping of only the faulty section while maintaining system stability .

2. Differential Protection

Differential protection compares the current entering and leaving a protected element, such as a transformer, generator, or busbar. If the difference exceeds a set limit, indicating an internal fault, the relay operates to isolate the equipment. This method is highly sensitive and fast, providing precise protection against internal faults while ignoring external disturbances .

3. Distance Protection

Distance protection measures the impedance between the relay location and the fault point on a transmission line. The relay operates when the measured impedance falls below a preset value, which corresponds to a fault within a specific zone. Distance relays are commonly used for long transmission lines and can provide directional discrimination, ensuring that only the section with the fault is disconnected .
