Understanding A-B Polarity

In fiber optic networks, A-B polarity ensures that the transmit (Tx) port on one end connects to the receive (Rx) port on the other end, maintaining proper signal flow and preventing communication errors (Tx→Tx or Rx→Rx) . For duplex LC or SC patch cords, the "A" end is typically the transmit side, and the "B" end is the receive side. When facing a connector in the key-up position, B is on the left and A is on the right .

Methods for Identifying Ends

Method A (Straight-Through)

  • Uses a Type A MTP/MPO trunk cable with opposite key orientations on each end (key up vs key down).
  • Fiber positions are one-to-one mapped, meaning fiber 1 at one end connects directly to fiber 1 at the other end.
  • Standard A-to-B duplex patch cords are used on both sides to maintain correct polarity .

Method B (Reversed)

  • Uses a Type B MTP/MPO trunk cable with key-up connectors on both ends.
  • Fiber positions are reversed, so fiber 1 at one end connects to fiber 12 at the other end in a 12-fiber cable.
  • A-to-B duplex patch cords are still used to ensure Tx/Rx alignment .

Method C (Pair-Flipped)

  • Uses a Type C MTP/MPO trunk cable, where fiber pairs are flipped internally.
  • Fiber 1 connects to fiber 2, fiber 2 connects to fiber 1, and so on.
  • Standard A-to-B patch cords are applied at both ends to maintain proper polarity .

Practical Identification Techniques

  1. Check Connector Key Orientation: Determine if the connector is key-up or key-down; this affects fiber mapping and polarity .
  2. Follow Color Codes and Numbering: Use TIA-598-C color coding for multifiber cables to identify fiber positions and maintain A-B polarity .
  3. Use Test Equipment: Optical light sources and power meters can verify that Tx signals reach the correct Rx ports.
