Types of Switches in PV Systems

1. DC Disconnect Switches DC disconnect switches are installed between the PV panels and the inverter to safely interrupt the direct current generated by the solar array. They are designed to handle high DC voltages and prevent dangerous arcing, which is more challenging in DC circuits because current does not naturally cross zero. Modern DC switches often use silver-tungsten contacts, arc chutes, or magnetic blowout coils to achieve rapid arc suppression, typically within 3–5 milliseconds, ensuring personnel and equipment safety during maintenance or emergencies .

2. AC Disconnect Switches AC disconnects are placed between the inverter and the utility connection point. Since AC current naturally crosses zero, these switches are easier to design and are used to isolate the inverter from the grid for maintenance or emergency shutdowns .

3. Changeover Switches Changeover switches manage the transition of loads between solar power, the main grid, and backup generators. They prioritize solar energy as the primary source and automatically transfer the load to the grid or generator when solar output is insufficient. Key features include voltage and frequency monitoring, priority logic, and anti-islanding protection to prevent backfeeding into the grid .

4. Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS) An ATS automates the switching process between mains electricity and PV power. It monitors voltage thresholds or outage conditions and transfers the load to the PV system or backup generator without manual intervention. Proper installation requires connecting the PV system, inverter, and mains supply to the ATS, configuring switching parameters, and testing the system to ensure reliable operation .

Installation and Safety Considerations

  • Voltage and Current Ratings: Switches must be rated above the maximum expected system voltage and current, often 25% higher than calculated values, to ensure longevity and safe operation .
  • Environmental Protection: IP67 or NEMA 4X ratings are recommended for outdoor installations to protect against dust, water, and UV exposure .
  • Compliance: Switches must comply with standards such as NEC Article 690.13 and IEC 60364-7-712, which require means for disconnecting both the PV modules and the inverter .
  • Maintenance: Regular inspection, cleaning, and testing of switches, inverters, and connections are essential to maintain system efficiency and safety .
