Sc fiber optic module

An SC fiber optic module is an SFP transceiver with an SC connector, primarily used to connect to legacy SC-based fiber networks.

Overview

An SC SFP module is a Small Form-factor Pluggable transceiver that uses an SC (Subscriber Connector) as its fiber interface, unlike the more common LC SFP modules which use LC connectors . The SC connector features a 2.5 mm ferrule and a simple push-pull locking mechanism, making it robust and easy to handle, especially in field deployments . SC SFP modules are typically single-fiber (BiDi) transceivers, meaning they transmit and receive data over a single fiber strand, which is different from standard duplex LC SFPs .

Key Differences from LC SFP Modules

  • Connector Size: SC connectors are larger (2.5 mm ferrule) compared to LC connectors (1.25 mm ferrule), which limits their use in high-density switch ports .
  • Density: LC SFPs allow more ports per switch due to their smaller size, while SC SFPs are less suitable for high-density environments .
  • Applications: SC SFPs are mainly used in legacy networks, GPON/EPON FTTH deployments, and simplex BiDi modules, whereas LC SFPs dominate modern enterprise LANs and data centers .
  • Availability: SC SFP modules are less common and usually only available as bidirectional transceivers, while LC SFPs have a wide range of standard duplex options .

Advantages and Use Cases

  • Legacy Compatibility: SC SFP modules allow direct connection to existing SC fiber cabling without requiring LC-SC adapters .
  • Ease of Handling: The push-pull design is convenient for field technicians, especially when wearing gloves .
  • Robustness: SC connectors are mechanically stable and reliable for outdoor or PON applications .

Considerations

  • Limited Density: Due to their larger size, SC SFPs are not ideal for high-density switch panels.
  • Cost and Availability: LC SFPs are generally more cost-effective and widely available, making them the preferred choice for new deployments .
  • Transceiver Type: Only BiDi SC SFPs are commonly available, so they may not support standard duplex fiber setups . In summary, SC SFP modules are specialized transceivers designed for legacy SC fiber networks or specific PON applications, offering robust and simple connectivity but with limitations in density and availability compared to LC SFP modules .
